Saturday College Football Notes

by:Matt Jones09/17/06
A Quick turn around the College Football landscape: (1) I hate to say it people, but I think Louisville is the real deal. The game against Miami was the biggest in school history and regardless of how overrated the Hurricanes end up being, winning was still huge for the program. But what you have to like most is that the Louisville offense looked better after Brohm got hurt. If I had told you at the beginning of the season that Louisville would have lost BOTH Michael Bush and Brian Brohm, but nevertheless still had a chance to go undefeated, you would have thought I was crazy. Now that is a distinct possibility. Are you skeptical? Who is going to beat them? You like West Virginia winning in Louisville....ok maybe. But last year's game Louisville gave away and this time it is at home. No other game is truly loseable. Yes they go on the road to Kansas St, but they are dreadful. Pitt and Rutgers are on the road, and those are decent games, but not ones that I would guess the Ville is shaking in their boots about (especially since Michigan St handed Pitt their hind end at home this weekend). As much as we may hate it, this may be the year that the Ville knocks on the national door. (2) As any non-Catholic surely agrees, it is always fun watching perennial overrated Notre Dame be brought down a notch. The Irish got destroyed on their home field by a Michigan team that most expected to struggle. While I have always believed that college football is better when Notre Dame is good, I do hate listening to the hype, especially the decision to annoint "Buttock in the front" Charlie Weis the next Vince Lombardi. Weis is a great coach, but Notre Dame always gets WAYYYY more credit than they are worth. Not any more....at least for a couple of weeks. (3) Boy that USC-Nebraska game really made the decision of College Gameday to go to LA seem really intelligent, didnt it? Synergy or not, Gameday following the ABC Primetime telecast has made the show less special....period. (4) The Kentucky Sports Radio "4 Star Lock of the Week" is now 3-0 thanks to the crazy game in Eugene. Oklahoma covered and should have won the game, if not for the horrible officiating and bizarre clock management of the Sooners. The Pac 10 is always wacky and the finish to that game, with the onside kick, the mysterious pass interference and the blocked field goal truly was something. Texas beat Rice by more than 34, so Phil Steele moved up to 2-1 on his locks. (5) TCU is going undefeated folks and will be making a BCS bowl. The Texas Tech game was the one they could have lost and they handled Red Raiders easily, holding Mike Leach's team to only 3 points....an amazing result. TCU is this year's Utah and in my opinion is a better team....watch them this year when you get a chance. Ohio St is the best team. Auburn is second....in my view Texas is probably the third best team, but Louisville may be fourth....as much as it PAINS me to say it.
