Scouting the Five - South Carolina

#23 - Bruce Ellington - 5'9" Freshman 2010-11 stats - 30.8 min/g, 14.9 points, 3.6 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 38% FG, 40% 3pt, 64% FT Cloned from a single hair off of Devan Downey's head, Ellington is the new little straw to stir the drink for the Gamecocks. Like Downey, he's a crafty scorer that can get to the rim and put up points in bunches, as evidenced by his 22 against Vandy and 23 against Florida. Hopefully Downey's penchant for lighting up Kentucky was more of a personal thing and not passed along in the experiment. I don't know if I can handle four more years of watching a little man give Kentucky the business. #44 - Sam Muldrow - 6'9" Senior 2010-11 stats - 27.4 min/g, 10.1 p, 7.0 reb, 3.5 blk, 40% FG, 32% 3pt, 71% FT Muldrow has been around forever, and is Carolina's career leader in consecutive blocks of Patrick Patterson's shots. He's the anchor in the paint for Coach Horn's bunch, and has developed his scoring ability to go along with his defensive skills to turn himself into a well-rounded and difficult player to deal with. He ranks second in the SEC and sixth in the nation in blocks and could give Kentucky's thin interior trouble. #30 - Lakeem Jackson - 6'5" Sophomore 2010-11 stats - 29.5 min/g, 9.6 p, 6.4 reb, 2.7 a, 49% FG, 47% FT Not related to Tito, but still a pretty serviceable basketball player. He's only made three treys on the season, but has the second-most field goals on the team, so that means something I'm sure. Probably that he scores points but not from shooting threes. Mostly twos, I suppose. #2 - Brian Richardson - 6'4" Freshman 2010-11 stats - 22.1 min/g, 7.3 p, 1.8 reb, 35% FG, 34% 3pt, 73% FT The second-most productive of Carolina's trio of starting freshmen, Richardson can shoot it from outside, as he's hit only seven non-threes this season. In fact, 80% of his shot attempts have been from deep, meaning the Cats will have to be careful not to leave him open to hit shots and get Sandstorm pumping. #24 - Damontre Harris - 6'9" Freshman 2010-11 stats - 14.1 min/g, 3.3 p, 3.3 reb, 59% FG, 58% FT Harris has started the last few games after coming off the bench earlier this season. He's not terribly productive, with only 39 shot attempts on the season, but is strong on defense and takes some of the pressure off of Muldrow inside. Key Reserves #12 - Ramon Galloway - 6'2" Sophomore 2010-11 stats - 23.6 min/g, 10.3 p, 1.8 reb, 38% FG, 39% 3pt, 58% FT The team's second-leading scorer plays a little bit of the Doron Lamb (or, lately, Terrence Jones) role for the Gamecocks as the spark off the bench. He's yet another solid three-point shooter and would appreciate it if you'd stop calling him 'Razor.' #15 - Malik Cooke - 6'6" Junior 2010-11 stats - 25.4 min/g, 8.8 p, 7.2 reb, 47% FG, 33% 3pt, 71% FT Has started ten games this year, ranking first on the team in steals and fourth in scoring. Head Coach - Darrin Horn In his second third year with South Carolina, the Kentucky native has his team in a surprising first place in the SEC East when they were picked to finish last before the season. It's yet to be seen if they'll continue the hot start, but Horn seems to be on his way doing what so many before him failed to do in Columbia: Turn the program into a winner.
