The biggest news of the day actually broke here on KSR as we learned that Randall Cobb will have arthriscopic knee surgery on Tuesday in order to repare torn ccartilage in his knee. They will not know until after the surgery whether it will keep him out of the Bowl game, but it will certainly keep him out of most of the practices between now and the game. Rich Brooks hinted after the Tennessee game that he was considering going back to Mike Hartline for the bowl game, a result he had reached even before he knew of the injury. Now that the injury has taken place, you have to assume that Hartline goes into that game as the starting quarterback and if Cobb plays that position, it will be in a reserve role. It is a tough injury for the kid, but the hope is that the damage will be minimal and he will be able to return very soon. (2): The other big question is what Bowl Game will the Cats end up in this year? I have talked with a source close to the deliberations and this is what I am told. Most of the folks in the administration and the folks with the Music City Bowl prefer having the Cats in Nashville. However the SEC would like to see the Cats help the sales in Memphis, while having Vandy in Nashville. Thus it is very likely at this point that the Cats end up in Memphis versus the East Carolina/Tulsa winner. That was certainly the tone that you heard tonight from Rich Brooks on his coach's show when he suggested that neither he, nor the team, wanted to go back to Nashville for another round. I think that viewpoint is a mistake, as a game in Nashville against an ACC opponent (likely North Carolina) seems much more positive than playing a Conference USA team in Memphis.....but it isnt my call and so as of today, the Liberty may be winning out. We will keep you updated. (3): Lets talk football recruiting for a sec. I spoke with a couple of folks from my home county (Bell of course, who is going to put the beat down on Boyle County on Friday night....with me in attendance of course) and it looks like UK is now a player for Monte Merrick, the all-world kicker from the mountains. At this point Merrick, who has one of the 5-7 best legs in the country, has a scholarship offer from Missouri, which would be his leader. But if Kentucky offers a scholarship, they would become the frontrunner. He expects coaches from Missouri, Auburn and Georgia to be in attendance at his game on Friday and he is hoping that Steve Ortmeyer will be there from UK. Because two scholarships are already being used for kickers, UK is hesitant.....but they need a good one and Monte may be it. (4): On the basketball front, most of the talk today was about the play of DeAndre Liggins in Vegas. While he still is unlikely to hit the starting lineup, Coach Gillispie said that he had the best control of the game in the second half of any of his point guards since arriving at Kentucky. As we all expect Liggins' minutes to increase as the year goes on, it is only a matter of time before he becomes the primary option at the position. Gillispie said he was impressed most with his toughness and that he kept his cool as the pressure increased in the second half against West Virginia. High praise from a coach who likes to give it out sparingly. We got a lot coming with the Intern telling us the SEC slant, a look at what we shall see when Lamar comes to town and more making fun of Louisville. More later.....
