Some Sobering Derby News

by:Corey Nichols05/06/12
It was all fun and games... Amidst the joy and jubilation that was, and should be, the Derby, some unfortunate discoveries were made early this morning in the stable area of Churchill Downs. An as-yet-unidentified man was discovered dead at roughly 4:50 am, in the back of a barn belonging to local trainer Angel Montano Sr.  The man had suffered injuries indicative of a struggle, and have lead authorities to believe that he was "involved in some type of altercation." ESPN.com wonders whether there was any connection between the could-be crime and the Derby itself, though it's highly likely that the location was just a matter of coincidence, and not of conspiracy.  Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Alicia Smiley had this to say about the incident:
"At this point we don't have anything pointing to the fact that this had any association with Churchill Downs or the Derby itself. "Our investigation is ongoing as to why he would have specifically been at this location."
Police officials are working on an autopsy to discover cause of death, and next-of-kin will be notified as soon as any identifying information is found.  It's a tragic situation, and hopefully a pattern of post-Derby maladies hasn't started after a jockey from last year's race was found dead a week later from an apparent drug overdose.
