Kentucky's true freshman quarterbacks have begun the battle in practice for the newly vacant starting position. QB Jalen Whitlow will have first dibs on the spot, and will most likely start on Saturday vs. Mississippi State. Fresh off of a redshirt removal, QB Patrick Towles will get a chance to play for the position as well. Both Towles and Whitlow took first-team snaps today, and according to OC Randy Sanders, we are in for an exciting game versus the Bulldogs. -"It'll be exciting either way." Sanders said when asked about how the young quarterbacks will fare against Mississippi State. It's not exactly a ringing endorsement from Sanders, but it's hard to predict what kind of production he'll get from these two young guys. -So how did they look on the practice field today? "I think we set a record for knucklehead calls today," Sanders replied. -Sanders acknowledged how different the skill sets are between Whitlow and Towles. He wants to get both in the most comfortable situation possible to succeed. Sanders thinks playing time will be determined by, not only what is shown on the practice field, but the answers they give him in the film room. -Somethings will probably change offensively with the loss of Max Smith, but one thing that'll stay the same is Kentucky's no-huddle. Sanders said it's  harder for freshman to get calls correct in a huddle so he'll just call them from the sidelines.   -When asked the problems Mississippi State presented to the Cats, DC Rick Minter said "about 180 yards of rushing." Kentucky defense has focused on stopping the "Power-O" play in practice, something South Carolina's offense had success running last week. -Minter will keep CB Martavius Neloms at safety for the foreseeable future because of the emergence of CB Cody Quinn and with CB Cartier Rice back healthy. -Neloms on his switch back to safety: "I'll play wherever coach needs me to play, but I'm excited to be back at safety. I'm able to be the quarterback of the defense back there, something I love to do." -LB Avery Williamson was asked about what he's seen from Towles since he's been at Kentucky, "He got a strong arm. He's got a real strong arm. I feel like he can really help the team. If he gets a chance he'll be able to help the team." -Williamson was upset about the loss to South Carolina, but feels like Kentucky has a really good chance to take down Mississippi State this week. "We let one get away last week, but I'm confident we can win this game if we play well."
