If there is one team in the SEC struggling to find its identity more than Kentucky it has to be Arkansas. If there is one coach in the league on a hotter seat than Joker Phillips it has to be John L. Smith. If there is one fan base even more disassociated with its team than Big Blue Nation, it has to be Razorback fans. This game may seem totally irrelevant — and in the grand scheme it really is. But the team that loses this game will likely lose all control for the remainder of the season. If you are absolutely out of your mind and still hopeful for a bowl appearance this season, here is the make-it or break-it game. Mathematically the Cats wouldn’t face elimination until next week, but because the opponent is No. 14 Georgia it’s hard to fathom the Wildcats winning that contest. So a victory in Fayetteville may just delay the inevitable for a couple of weeks. Tyler Russell for Mississippi State isn’t even close to being one of the better quarterbacks in the SEC. Yet he put up 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the Wildcats extremely thin and young secondary. Tyler Wilson for Arkansas, on the other hand, is one of the better quarterbacks… And Arkansas is averaging 300 yards per game through the air. Arkansas has completely fallen apart in the wake of Bobby Petrino. The Razorbacks have a roster loaded with talent that — with Petrino — should likely still be undefeated and hunting for a national championship. However, this team isn’t scoring points and they aren’t stopping anybody from scoring either. They have 23 points for, and 35 points against per game. That’s a losing ratio worse than Kentucky’s. Who knows what we’ll see this weekend. Maybe both teams will come out and play their best football against the worst team either has faced. Or maybe not. Maybe the Cats and the Hogs will continue their steep slide into oblivion together. With the product we’ve seen thus far we should all be numb anyway.
