The best hair in horse racing now claims one of the most prestigious honors in the business. Steve Asmussen is the winningest trainer in Churchill Downs’ history.

Friday afternoon Ricardo Santana rode Drop Dead Gorgeous across the finish line beneath the Twin Spires for Asmussen’s 738th career win, surpassing Louisville native Dale Romans who took the top spot from Bill Mott in 2017.

“This is a very significant honor,” he said. “I know the people who have been in this spot before, and been here consistently, and for us to have won the most races is a very proud accomplishment.”

Asmussen’s first win at Churchill Downs was in 1996. Of the 700+ victories, none have been the Kentucky Derby. He’s came close a few times. Rachel Alexandra won the Kentucky Oaks and Preakness, while Curlin finished third before going onto the win the Preakness and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
