"I think if you look at each of those cases, it's a good thing because we feel just as good with either/or," Stoops said. "You know the running back position, you've got to play a bunch of backs. In the heat that we expect, you're going to have to play backs, same with the wide receivers, same with the Will (weakside) linebacker position. They both deserve reps and they'll get them." After Boom Williams underwent surgery on his elbow this summer, the staff has been careful with him in camp, keeping him from full contact during drills and scrimmages. Stoops says having so much depth at the running back position allows them to ease Boom back into the groove of things, starting with splitting reps with JoJo on Saturday. "The nice thing is is JoJo is playing some very good football. We'll have both of those guys at full tilt and you know we're deep at that position. We'll roll them as needed. [Boom] has done everything except the live reps. As you saw early in camp, he was in the red [jersey] just to give him a little more time to get that elbow healed. Outside of that, he's gotten quite a few reps. It's always different for running backs because we're five deep there and you have to get those guy reps and game ready reps in practice, so they may not have the long drives that you'll see in the games." Hopefully Boom will feel good enough to break off a run like this to open the season once again:
