T.J.'s Player Preview: Tyler Herro

by:TJ Walker08/01/18
Kentucky Sports Radio will preview every player heading into UK’s Bahamas trip starting on August 8th. The complete schedule can be found here and all games are on SEC Network. Basics: Tyler Herro is a 6-foot-5, 192-pound shooting guard from Greenfield, Wisc. Having seen Herro this summer he may be closer to 6-foot-6 wing as he appeared taller than Keldon Johnson. Herro was ranked No. 36 in the Rivals150. 2017-2018: Herro averaged 32.9 points, 7.4 assists, 3.6 assists and 3.3 steals per game during his senior season at Whitnall. He was a 43.5 percent three-point shooter from deep and was named to the Jordan Brand Classic game and Nike Hoop Summit. Herro was initially committed to Wisconsin but decommitted in October and committed to UK just weeks later. He picked UK over the Badgers, Villanova, Florida and Arizona. Bahamas Expectations: When Herro committed to Kentucky it didn't move the needle other UK targets have during the John Calipari era, but now some fans are most excited to see Herro in the Bahamas. We've heard great things about Herro during this summer from UK's practice reports and Calipari said Herro has been holding his own against Keldon Johnson. Calipari generally likes to settle in to a six or seven man rotation come March. We don't expect that rotation to be finalized in the Bahamas or even the first couple months of the season, but can Herro do enough in the Bahamas to show the fans that he will be a factor on this team? That's his hope and it's what I expect. It won't take long for you to see that Herro isn't just a shooter. Herro can attack and pull-up from anywhere on the floor. Some fans will be surprised by Herro's athletic ability, but that won't be an issue for Herro this season. I'm more curious in seeing if Herro's shooting ability will translate to faster, bigger and longer defenders. If it does then that could give UK two great outside shooters.
