Kentucky’s assistants aren’t the only coaches who got contract extensions today. According to 247 SportsRick Barnes just signed a new 6-year $21 million deal that will keep him at Tennessee through the 2023-24 season.

Since taking over in Knoxville three years ago, Barnes has turned the Volunteers into one of the toughest teams not only in the league, but the country. Even though the media picked Tennessee to finish 13th in the conference last year, the Vols tied with Auburn for the regular season crown, earning Barnes SEC Coach of the Year honors.

Under Barnes’ reign, Tennessee is 3-0 vs. Kentucky at Thompson-Boling Arena and considered a top five team heading into the 2018-19 season. Barnes is now the 10th highest paid coach in college basketball and second in the SEC to only — you guessed it — John Calipari, who makes $8 million annually.

Smart move by the Vols. Dangit.
