There will be two groups of people at the Kentucky Derby today. The first will be decked out in their finest and gaudiest outfits enjoying the festivities of one of the greatest days in sport. The second will be corralled into the sure to be muddy infield, given copious amount of alcohol and told to have fun. There are very few situations that present themselves with a similar dichotomy to the class structures within The Hunger Games but the Kentucky Derby is one of them. There will also be horse racing, if you're into that.
- The track at Churchill Downs has already been described as sloppy after overnight thunderstorms, now the Derby guests can expect a hot, muggy day of festivities. The Associated Press has a nice Derby write up that touches upon many different aspects of the big race.
- If you missed it yesterday, a female jockey won the Kentucky Oaks for the first time. Rosie Napravnik on the back of Believe You Can got out to a quick start and held on to win the $1 million dollar race. SI has a nice write up on a fantastic female first in the horse industry.
- Pete DiPrimio of The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind. has a write up about the termination of the UK-IU series. Legitimate reasons can be made from both coaches as to why they stuck so soundly to their guns, but the real losers in this scenario are the fans. As a fan, I want to see Kentucky play the best teams on a regular basis. I don't really care for all this finger pointing stuff.
- Coach Cal's media BFF, Andy Katz, has an inside look at the team's visit to the White House yesterday. He reminded us in it that President Obama didn't choose Kentucky to win it all. It's always great to make the commander-in-chief eat a little crow. However, Mr. President may be able to wiggle out of his pick by asserting that he was just trying to appeal to a swing state in North Carolina. Let's let him have that.
- Michael Kidd-Gilchrist's high school teammate, Derrick Gordon, who starred as a freshman at Western Kentucky last season has finally made a decision on his transfer. Gordon has been looking for a new school since the Cats eliminated the Hilltoppers in the first round of the NCAA tournament and has now decided on UMass. Let's wish him all the best not only because it's what MKG would do, but also because he seems like a solid guy.
