The Point Guard Situation

by:Dustin Rumbaugh01/22/10
It's obviously no secret to any UK fan that Kentucky has the guard positions pretty much locked up this year. John Wall is the best player in America and Eric Bledsoe could be THE star player on almost any team in America, except Wall's. NBA execs and scouts know that too and recently they've put it out in the press that Bledsoe is someone they might be looking at in this year's draft at a lottery pick level. These are all things that will factor heavily in the decisions of 2010's class of Kentucky-targeted point guards. Before the news of Eric Bledsoe's possible departure at the end  of this season came out, we talked about the fact that both Josh Selby and Brandon Knight were more than aware that Eric might the next point guard in waiting at UK and that might take away from some of their playing time, even though Calipari is consistently running a two point guard offense this season. If Bledsoe were to leave, UK could be looking at a situation where they would take a pledge from both Josh Selby and Brandon Knight and, even if they don't get both, the odds of them landing one of the two will get considerably better if Bledsoe vacates his position and playing time. I recently talked with Josh Selby's mother, Maeshon Witherspoon, about the recent Bledsoe/NBA news and here's her thoughts on the prospect of him leaving, her son taking over the point guard spot at UK and possibly joining the roster along with Brandon Knight: "I think they [Knight and Selby] could play together because they both can be off the ball guards. That will depend on who is left and coming in. I think both players feel they are not John Wall replacements." It's still too early to know exactly what Bledsoe will do and what that will change in the mindsets of Knight and Selby. Still, it remains something to be on the look out for. Knowing that UK could lose two first round guards to the NBA draft and reload with two more is comforting for both UK fans and the coaching staff, I'm sure. Other notes:

- Scout.com is reporting that Brandon Knight will be making his final official visit to Miami as expected. That visit is set to occur this weekend.

- Doron Lamb also confirmed with Scout that he will probably be making his decision sometime after the NCAA tournament. This meshes well with what we talked about earlier with Lamb most likely making his decision after his spring break opportunity to travel back to New York from Oak Hill and sit down with his parents to discuss all of his visits and the schools on his list. At this point he has taken all of his official visits, making trips to Oklahama, Kentucky, Arizona, UConn and Kansas.

- This is Brandon Knight playing hurt.

- Nice video of Terrence Jones at the Les Schwab Invitational. I like how it shows all the different ways that a very versatile Terrence Jones can impact a game and score.

- Gorgui Sy Dieng talks with Anthony Wireman about the different schools showing him interest. At this point, one of those schools is UK. Right now you can place UK's interest in Dieng at a scouting level. No offer has been extended yet but they are definitely interested and an offer could be made at some point in the future. The interview shows that on top of being a skilled play, Dieng is also a very intelligent kid.

- Here's a video of Quality Education beating St. Mark's. It has some nice looks at Quincy Miller's game.
