The SEC's Friday New and Views

  In a first round dominated by trades, the SEC once again proved itself to be the dominant conference in college football. The SEC has not only maintained a stronghold on the national title over the past few years, but the SEC has also placed an incredible number of its player into the NFL. In tonight's draft the SEC had 8 of the 1st 18 picks in the first round. Alabama alone had 4 picks in the 1st round. Kentucky has yet to have a player drafted so far, but Winston Guy and Danny Trevathan both stand a chance to hear their names called sometime late tomorrow.   And now on to the news...   - News broke late Thursday evening that 2013 prospect Troy Williams, a Kentucky target, will be making his college choice "between this weekend and next weekend." Most believe that the choice will come down to Kentucky and North Carolina for Williams.   - In a bit of sad news considering the two most recent games between the two storied programs, the Kentucky/Indiana men's basketball series seems to be in jeopardy. Neither school has been able to reach an agreement on how to approach the game. It seems that the Kentucky side wants to play the game on a neutral court, rotating cities every other year. The Indiana camp on the other hand seems to be in favor of keeping the games on the respective campuses, alternating which teams hosts each year. Both schools have solid reasoning for their wishes, but until the two see eye to eye or one side budges, the series which had finally sparked back up to the level of a heated rivalry, seems to be in limbo. John Calipari and Tom Crean are close friends, so many are still holding out hope that an agreement can be reached. A few months ago when Calipari threw out the teaser that one of the series between North Carolina, Louisville and Indiana might have to be dropped, many fans (especially of the younger generation) were quick to kick the Hoosiers to the curb. Following the dramatic defeat in Bloomington and the hellaciously-paced Sweet 16 showdown, the Kentucky fans had started to warm to the idea of continuing the series.   - Opah! Mislav Brzoja took his official visit to Kentucky today. Brzoja must have kept a low profile on his visit seeing as he was not spotted at a prom or Disney On Ice. Kentucky fans seem to be on the fence when it comes to the Croatian born recruit, who only recently jumped on the radars of major BCS schools such as Kentucky and LSU among others. Brzoja's strength, from the few highlight clips we've been able to get our hands on, seems to be his outside shooting touch. As we've learned in the past 3 years with Calipari teams, a 3-point shooting threat is crucial to the overall success of the style of play. Some Kentucky fans worry about the log jam of players though if Calipari successfully brings in two more players for next year's class. The number of potential returning players after next year, in combination with the outstanding list of 2013 recruits who all hold Kentucky in high regard, could provide a bit of a predicament for Calipari. Calipari prefers a small rotation of 7-8 players at most. It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks develop with the last few recruits on the board. I think Calipari brings in one more. The question is does he go with a big man like Bennett or an outside shooting threat like Brzoja. Or does he go with both? We will know soon.   - The UK Hoops team lost one of its best coaches and recruiters today when associate head coach Kyra Elzy chose to return to her alma mater. The former Lady Vol will be returning home, likely to help soften the blow of the loss of Pat Summit to the Tennessee coaching staff. By all accounts, Elzy had been one of the key recruiters responsible for bringing in top 10 classes to Kentucky as of late. In a statement released by Matthew Mitchell, he noted that Elzy expressed that it would be a dream of hers to return to her alma mater to coach. We wish Kyra Elzy the best as she moves on. It's hard to ever blame someone for going back to their roots. With that said, she will be greatly missed in the women's basketball program at Kentucky.   -In case you missed it, our fearless leader Matt Jones took a few hundred, err thousand words out of his day to re-visit a previously written article by Gary Parrish questioning the integrity of Anthony Davis. Click here to read Jones' the full article.    - In some NBA news, Josh Harrellson took advantage of an opportunity with most playoff berths and seeding decided by scoring a career high 18 points to go along with 9 rebounds for the New York Knicks. Jorts started off his rookie campaign in strong fashion for the Knicks before missing a key portion of the season with an injury. It's good to see him back on the court and doing well for himself.   - Another big congratulations goes out to UK men's tennis senior Eric Quigley, who took home the SEC Player of the Year award earlier this afternoon. Quigley also won the Mr. Wildcat Award at the Catspy's for the second year in a row.   - The opening evening of the NFL Draft did not include the names of any Kentucky players. Although Winston Guy may have had some butterflies for a half a second... - One of KSR's favorite personalities, Stone Cold Willow, joined forces with national champion Terrence Jones to throw the first pitch tonight at the Lexington Legends baseball game. Technically neither Jones or Willow threw the first pitch of the ball game. Approximately 13 people threw some form of a "first pitch." Not kidding. When it finally came time for Terrence Jones to have his moment, he graciously put the spotlight on Stone Cold Willow who had been excited about this moment for over a week now. Jones took the microphone and told the crowd, "Hey everybody, I know I was supposed to throw the first pitch, but I'm going to let my friend Stone Cold Willow do it." The excitement on Willow's face was priceless. He took the mound with his fathead, smoothed a few backs out, and then proceeded to throw a ball down the plate. Or ten feet above the plate. It really didn't matter.
