The Triple Play hits again!!!!

by:Matt Jones09/17/06
When you think of the phrase "Triple Play", what do you think of? Likely the first thought is of the touring band "Triple Play All Stars" (shown above) who have been known to rock arenas all across southern Missouri. For me however, the phrase has always had a different meaning....about 15 years ago, as I was a wee middle school student, I realized that my 3 favorite football teams, the Middlesboro High School Yellow Jackets, the Kentucky Wildcats and the Chicago Bears never seemed to win on the same weekend. Now part of that was because two of the three teams (UK and Chicago) were generally awful, but nevertheless it was eerie how rare it was when I could be happy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Inevitably some team would blow it and the Triple Play would not occur. Over the course of those fifteen years, the Triple Play only occurred seven times....amazing when you consider that one of those teams (Middlesboro) won a state championship during that time period. Even more to the point, up until this year it had been a full FIVE years since a Triple Play had occurred. During that time, Middlesboro had produced District winning teams and the Bears have won the NFC Central twice....still no Triple Play. But now, we have a first. For the first time in my lifetime, the Triple Play has occurred TWO WEEKS IN A ROW! Further more, this weekend was special. Middlesboro crushed Cawood (who is sadly being lost to consolidation at the end of the season, joining Evarts and Cumberland as the new "Bloody" Harlan County) 48-18, the Cats won the biggest game of the Rich Brooks era and the Bears demolished another NFC Central rival. This is unprecedented football success people!!! Why arent the kids storming the Euclid Avenue in Lexington? Well maybe because no one cares except me, but they should. Next week the streak will likely end (at Florida will do that to you), but for now it exists....and two weeks in a row is unbelieveable....start the bandwagons, I smell State Championship, BCS bowl and Super Bowl!!!!
