The Week That Is About To Be

by:Christopher Johns01/25/10
20090217vanderbilt2 The sports schedule is getting a little hectic. The NFL is in the middle of the playoffs. High school, college, and pro basketball are running strong. Monday is a good day to plan out your week and make sure you don’t miss any of the UK-related action. Tuesday -Men's Basketball - Kentucky at South Carolina - ESPN - 9:00p: Kentucky is on a two game losing streak to the Gamecocks and their Crispin Glover-esque head coach. This year's squad from Columbia started out shaky with losses to Wofford and Baylor but seemed to right the ship when conference play began by beating LSU and Auburn. The Gamecocks are in the midst of a difficult stretch in their schedule that coincides with a 3 game losing streak. The last second loss to Florida on Saturday might have broken this team. Look for the Cats to win big and break their near two-year-old losing streak. Wednesday -Men's Tennis - Kentucky at Virginia Tech - 2:00p: It feels like Blacksburg, Virginia in January isn't the best place in the world to play tennis. You would think one of the perks of being on the tennis team is that you get to travel to a bunch of warm states to play your sport outside in the sunshine. Alas. Also, they stopped putting tennis balls in those sealed metal Pringle's cans didn't they? That was a horrible decision. Half the fun was cracking open a tube and getting that new tennis ball canned air smell. The men are on a roll after sweeping Xavier and Morehead State and look to continue the trend against the Hokies. Thursday -Women's Basketball - Kentucky at LSU - BBSN - 8:00p: The UK Hoops team has been on an absolute tear since their loss to South Carolina. They have been flat laying the wood to SEC West opponents. In their last three games, they have beaten the other team by an average of 20 points. The men aren't the only basketball buzzsaw currently in operation in Lexington. The Cats start a 2 game road trip in Baton Rogue and hope to continue their sweep of the SEC West. Friday -Women's Gymnastics - Kentucky at Arkansas - 8:00p: My Southern Gentleman upbringing prevents me from typing all the jokes that instantly leap to mind when thinking about an Arkansas Gymnastic Team. I'll just say that our team is strong this year and this should be a great match-up for the Wildcats. -Track - Rod McCravy Memorial at Lexington - All Day Event Saturday -Men's Basketball - Vanderbilt at Kentucky - ESPN - 4:00p: This is the marquee SEC match-up of the weekend that will serve as the appetizer for the Kansas-Kansas State game later on in the evening. The Wildcats are 2-6 over the last 8 games against the Commodores which includes a double overtime win that UK eeked-out for the signature win of Gillispie's inaugural season. The 'Dores have always played the Cats tough but will come to Lexington on the tail end of a brutal 2-game road trip against Tennessee and Kentucky. This game should be a fun one as UK will play at home for the first time as the #1 team in the country. -Track - Rod McCravy Memorial at Lexington - All Day Event Sunday -Women's Basketball - Kentucky at Mississippi State - BBSN - 3:00p: Our beloved UK Hoops team finally broke into the Top 25 last week in the ESPN poll, but get this: UK lost votes in the AP poll. Does anyone voting in the AP poll actually watch the games or are they just voting blindly? Charles Barkley would call this a turrible performance outta the AP. The Wildcats will keep the buzzsaw going against the Bulldogs before returning home. -Rifle Team - Kentucky at Nebraska - TBA: I love our rifle team.
