Thoughts on Atlanta...from Durham

by:Bomani Jones03/16/08

As some of you know, I’m kinda from Atlanta.  I was born downtown, went to college there, and my parents have lived there since I graduated from high school 11 years ago.  It’s not quite where I’m from, but it’s home, so the storm struck me in a slightly different way than some of you.

That said, I think it’s OK to laugh at a couple of things, don’t you?

1.  I wondered if there was someone saying “dammit, nobody told me there’d be a twister!  I woulda brought my video camera.”  And, judging from his pictures posing next to the wreckage, that person is Matt Jones.  The stereotypical humor from those pictures would be the same as if you saw me posing in a watermelon patch after the crop caught some sort of fungus.

2.  If UGA wins that title on Georgia Tech’s home floor, I think it would behoove Paul Hewitt to get Tech into the NCAAs next year.  Just a hunch.

3.  If Virginia Tech makes the tournament and Kentucky doesn’t, I’ll help you guys start the riot.  I don’t care if Georgia wins the game today or not.  There’s no better argument for the ACC deserving five bids than there is one for the SEC deserving six, really, especially that Kentucky has more wins worth discussing than VT.  How many more?  However many Kentucky has.  VT’s best win was over Miami Friday.  For the record, I’m pretty sure VT will make it in.

4.  I didn’t watch the SEC game yesterday, so you tell me–is it easier to hear the dude’s cussing on the court since nobody’s in the house?  I imagine this would be a great time for your children to learn to ways to earn spankings.

5.  Sundiata Gaines is the next Clyde Drexler.  Which is to say he’s not just gonna be balding by 25.  He’s going to be balding like a guy 45 year-old man that wears a short sleeve plaid shirt and a tie to work every day.

Enjoy the day, folks.  And if you’re in Atlanta, ask Matt what’s right off Interstate 20 around Spring Street.  I’m sure he knows by now.
