Today on KSR: Fishing, understood

I held my first fishing pole when I was knee-high, trying to be just like my daddy. I don’t remember the thrill of reeling in my first catch. I do remember spending more time than I liked reeling in sticks and moss.

“Boring” is how I would go on to describe fishing for the majority of my formative years. Even when beer entered the picture, fishing only slowed me down from drinking my sweaty can of Busch Light. Fishing just wasn’t for me, until it was.

Sunday afternoon I hopped in the Jon boat with my Dad and we set off for a new fishing hole he found. It’d been so long since my last cast I forgot to even grab the tackle box. It didn’t matter. Once we arrived at the location and tied onto a log, for two hours there was absolutely nothing to worry about.

There wasn’t a crying baby. There wasn’t a pandemic killing hundreds of thousands. Unarmed black men weren’t being killed by police officers. My hometown wasn’t on fire. It was just me, my Dad, the hot sun and a cool pool of water filled with hungry bluegill. It was quiet and I was at peace. The serene escape left me more refreshed than I’d felt in months.

Like all forms of escape, eventually a fish swallows a hook you cannot retrieve and it’s time to return to reality. If you bury your head in the lake water for too long you will drown. It’s just good to know that when the burdens and stress of this crazy world get too crazy, there’s always a fishing hole to help you press the reset button, if only for a couple of hours.

Louisville Police Chief Fired

Tensions rose in the city of Louisville Monday after an exchange with law enforcement left a man dead. David McAtee, a black local business-owner, died from a gunshot wound just outside of his BBQ restaurant at 26th and Broadway. Mayor Greg Fischer fired police chief Steve Conrad once they determined body cameras were not turned on during the altercation.

“It is unacceptable that the officers that responded last night did not have body cameras on and recording. This is the entire reason that we have those cameras,” said a visibly upset Governor Andy Beshear Monday afternoon. “Every other officer’s camera should be reviewed and … ought to be released.”

Hundreds gathered near the sight of the shooting at 26th and Broadway throughout the day, creating this powerful moment.

Later in the day protesters marched from downtown to the site at 26th and Broadway. During the peaceful march they were joined by LMPD officers.

Overnight reports of violence were minimal, but looting did occur at the Kroger located just across the street from the scene of the crime. Individuals from the neighborhood arrived in the parking lot as early as 5 a.m. to help clean up the mess left behind.

Even if you are not in the streets in the middle of the protests, anger and misinformation are spreading like wildfire online. Through all of the darkness, you can find hope and fellowship. As detractors were drawn to Lynn Bowden’s voice, the guy protected who him all season from SEC tacklers was quick to his defense once again.

A Loaded Lineup on KSR

Matt Jones is working through his furlough Tuesday morning. Hosting KSR from New York City, he’ll be joined by African-American leaders from across the Commonwealth. Vince Marrow leads off at 10 a.m., followed by Senate candidate Charles Booker at 10:30, Kentucky attorney general Daniel Cameron at 11 and Dr. Ricky Jones at 11:30.

Free Doughnuts at Krispy Kreme

There is absolutely no easy way to transition from civil unrest to sports. Will “free doughnuts” work? Maybe, I mean, who doesn’t like doughnuts? National Doughnut Day is Friday and Krispy Kreme is celebrating all week long by giving away a doughnut a day to every person that comes into a store, no purchase necessary.

Even though he likes those stinking Cardinal birds, we could not be more happy for our friend who welcomed a little one into the world Monday. Congrats Coffeys!
