Well that was fun, eh? For the first time since 1984, fans of the football ‘Cats can wake up this morning after beating Tennessee in Knoxville—and in convincing fashion, to boot. Mark Stoops’ boys ran wild against the 18th-ranked Vols on Saturday, piling up nearly 300 yards on offense and adding plenty more on defense in a stunning 34-7 blowout.

Kentucky (2-2) is officially back to .500 in the SEC, and suddenly, it’s a whole new schedule ahead. We’re recapping all the best parts from an exciting Saturday, plus an update on the MLB playoffs and more. Go Cats!

Defense Leads the Way Against Vols

One fumble recovery. Three interceptions. Two pick-sixes. For the second straight week, Kentucky’s defense managed to outscore the opposing offense. They were so good, even Tennessee’s backup QBs—yes, plural, because Jarret Guarantano was that bad—were powerless. After the debacle that was week two, who saw this coming from Brad White’s unit?

It was Kelvin Joseph and Jamin Davis who made the big highlight plays in the first half, but there’s plenty of credit to go around. Terry Wilson played a fantastic game on offense, completing 12 of 15 passes for 101 yards, one touchdown and zero picks while adding another 32 yards (and nearly another score) on the ground. Chris Rodriguez established himself pretty clearly as RB1, rushing for 73 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Even Joey Gatewood got the chance to show his stuff, completing his first pass as a Wildcat and rushing for 23 yards in three carries.

As soon as the final whistle sounded, the celebration was on, and you know it’s a good one when we get Swaggy Stoops on the postgame show:

To catch up on everything else that you missed from the celebration in Knoxville, here are the links to all of yesterday’s posts, including reactions from the KSR gang:

MLB: Rays Clinch, Dodgers Force Game 7

After blowing a 3-0 series lead to the Astros in this week’s American League Championship Series, a strong start from Charlie Morton helped the Tampa Bay Rays eek out a 4-2 win in Game 7 last night to clinch the first spot in this year’s World Series. It’s the second fall classic appearance in franchise history for the Rays, who joined the league as an expansion team in 1998.

On the other side, the Atlanta Braves once again were unable to close out the top-seeded L.A. Dodgers, who have now fought back from a 3-1 hole to tie the NLCS at three games apiece. Walker Buehler was lights out for L.A., who jumped on Braves ace Max Fried for three runs early and managed to hold on for a 3-1 victory.

The deciding Game 7 will be tonight at 8:15 p.m. eastern on Fox. The expected starters are Ian Anderson for the Braves and Tony Gonsolin for the Dodgers.

Volleyball ‘Cats Complete Sweep

Flying under the radar this weekend was the start of the UK Volleyball season, also against Tennessee. Kentucky shut down the Vols in Lexington 3-0 on Friday and 3-1 last night to make it a sweep of all things orange this weekend.

For what it’s worth, this should be a big year for the women of the V-Ball court: they were recently picked 3rd in the national coaches’ poll, the highest preseason ranking in program history. And if you need any more reason to watch, they’re currently being led by Nate Sestina’s girlfriend, Madison Lilley.

Gridiron Sunday

Today’s NFL slate is highlighted by Steelers vs. Browns at 1:00, Buccaneers vs. Packers at 4:00 and 49ers vs. Rams in the nightcap. For local fans, the Bengals play the Colts and the Titans play the Texans, both starting at 1:00.
