Today on KSR: Venus and Serena Williams Duel in Lexington

Today Venus and Serena Williams may face each other professionally for the final time... in Lexington, Kentucky. Venus Williams began play at Lexington's Top Seed Open by upsetting former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-2 in the first round. Today's second round matchup between the Williams sisters is their 31st meeting. Serena holds an 18-12 advantage over her older sister, including a 7-2 record in Grand Slam finals. They have not faced each other in two years, a second round U.S. Open match, the Grand Slam players are preparing for at this weekend's tournament. Tennis Channel coverage from the event begins at 11 am. The Williams' sisters are expected to take the court at approximately 12:30 pm ET. Whatever you do, Don't Geek.

Homecoming Repeat?

There's another sporting event beginning today that has captured the attention of the KSR staff. Friend of the blog and former writer, Aaron Flener, carries the bags for JT Poston. Today Poston returns home to North Carolina where he earned his first win last year in front of his grandfather. This week he’s paired with Sergio Garcia in the featured group on PGA Tour Live. NCAA Recommends COVID-19 Waiver 

There's an emphasis on the word "recommendation." It's not finalized but the NCAA is encouraging its institutions to allow students who choose to opt-out of athletics due to the coronavirus pandemic to preserve a year of eligibility. This feels like a no-brainer. Congrats NCAA, you did something.

Optimistic Mitch  

Kentucky's athletics director is determined to make sure college basketball does not follow a similar fate to some college football programs. Wednesday afternoon the chair of the tournament selection committee joined the NCAA's top basketball officials, Dan Gavitt and Craig Robinson, and Andy Katz to discuss the various contingency plans in play to ensure college basketball is played. Regional bubbles are a possibility. “Making sure we’re making informed and responsible decisions in a timely fashion, we remain very confident that we’re going to have a basketball season, albeit different, and maybe altered, if necessary," Barnhart said. "The virus, we don’t control, it controls us. Leading into March Madness, we’re very confident that’s going to happen. Different contingencies are being considered [to make that happen].”

Calipari Virtually Visits Former UofL Commit

Jack Pilgrim learned last night that after reaching out earlier this week, John Calipari and the rest of Kentucky's coaching staff conducted a virtual visit with Bryce Hopkins, a top 50 player in the 2021 recruiting class that was committed to Louisville until recently. The Cats are moving in quickly on the former Cardinal, although they did not extend a formal scholarship offer.
