If there are two things that everyone who reads and writes for KSR likes, a couple sure fire bets would be (1) former Wildcat basketball players and (2) acts of goodwill. Travis Ford, Madisonville product and (sometimes infamous) alumni of the 1991-1994 UK hoops squads, participated in such activity recently.

The most recent heart-wrenching natural distaster occurred in Moore, Oklahoma recently when tornados ravaged the town. The coverage brought a tear to nearly every eye in America as we all watched the fatality counts rise and then thankfully fall again after survivor’s were found. The road to recovery will be long, but it is great to see UK-connected folks getting involved. Barnhart, Stoops and Coach Cal all donated a great deal of money to the recovery efforts.

But our current Kentucky-to-Oklahoma transplant got hands-on for the cause: Travis Ford grilled out for the victims of the Moore tornados. The Oklahoma State hoops coach and his staff took an industrial-sized grill into Moore and served up burgers and hot dogs for all those in need. Money is always a great help, but sometimes there’s no replacement for getting hands-on when disaster strikes. Watch a video interview of Ford at the grill out here, and read what he had to say on it:

“I’d had a couple of friends who had been to Katrina and helped, and to Joplin, and I called them and asked them what they did and one of them told me they had hooked up one of these industrial grills behind their truck and loaded up hamburgers and hot dogs and took off,” Ford said. “I just thought that was a really good idea. So I threw my coaching staff together and said, ‘Hey, this is what we’re going to do. I’m going to find a grill, find as many hot dogs and hamburgers as I can find and buns.’ And we got it all together in the matter of a day.”
