Tyrese Maxey's next order of business: close out Kentucky's 2019 recruiting class with a bang

Kentucky commitment Tyrese Maxey is one of the to recruits in the class of 2019, and he’s also proving to be an elite recruiter.

The moment he announced his college decision, he hit the ground running on the recruiting trail to have other elite talent join him in Lexington next season. At every camp and AAU event, along with efforts on the phone and on social media, he’s been helping out John Calipari and the Kentucky coaching staff however he can.

With the AAU season over and high school basketball season right around the corner, Maxey said it’s time for him to turn up the heat on his efforts. He wants to win a national title as a Wildcat, and he wants a star cast around him to make that happen.

“It’s getting to that time,” Maxey told Jason Jordan of USA Today this weekend. “The season is almost here, and it’ll be over before you know it. I think the uncommitted guys are starting to see that they don’t have all the time in the world, and I want to use this weekend to my advantage.”

He’s referring to his time this weekend at the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Minicamp in Colorado Springs, where 88 total high-level prospects from the class of 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 are gathered to train and compete. Of the 88, a dozen or so are major Kentucky targets.

And you better believe he’s going to reel in at least a few to join him in 2019.

“We’ve got some really good pieces,” Maxey said. “I just want a couple more.”

Maxey said it’s not too hard to recruit for the Wildcats, and he’s confident it’s going to translate to a few commitments in the near future. The product sells itself.

“It’s easier when you’re trying to get the guys to come join you at Kentucky,” Maxey said. “It really sells itself because of the style of play, coach Calipari and the fans. I’m doing my part this weekend and I feel good about our chances.”

Maxey added James Wiseman is his No. 1 target, and he’s also teaming up with fellow Wildcat commit Kahlil Whitney to recruit Vernon Carey Jr. to Kentucky. Add in Isaiah Stewart, Matthew Hurt, and Keion Brooks, among others, the options were a plenty for Maxey this weekend in Colorado.

The Early Signing Period should be quite an interesting one for the Wildcats, and a lot of that has to do with Maxey’s work both on and off the floor.
