After losing their first home series this past weekend to Ball State, the UK Baseball team is back on track after a win over in-state rival Western Kentucky University, 6-5, on Tuesday night.

The Wildcat offense found some life in the sixth inning, taking a 5-2 lead over the Hilltoppers after RBIs from Trae Harmon, Kirk Liebert and Austin Schultz. Harmon started the rally with a double to left-center field to give the ‘Cats the lead.

WKU would not go quietly, though. The Hilltoppers tied things up again in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t stop Harmon at the batter’s box. His two-out single up the middle scored John Rhodes to put Kentucky back up 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh. The score would not change.

Right-hander Ryan Hagenow started on the mound for the Wildcats, beginning the game with six strikeouts through three innings. The ‘Cats would try five more pitchers in the match, with senior Sean Harney coming in to close in the top of the ninth inning after a WKU double made things too close for comfort. Harney struck two batters out swinging before a fly out to second base provided the final dagger for WKU.

The ‘Cats are back in action at Kentucky Proud Park this weekend for a series against Georgia State University. First pitch is on Friday is at 4 p.m.
