UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

by:Matt Jones09/22/10
wedfans1 We are three days away from the Battle in the Swamp and UK fans are starting to have a sneaky confidence. Maybe it is the fact that they feel extra good about the team, maybe it is because of the lingering belief that the Gators are slipping or maybe it is just slight delusion, but Cats fans seem to believe a victory could be coming on Saturday. I have a rule about football and asking out women...if it doesnt work 23 times, I am not going to assume it will work the 24th time. But I am starting to get that tingle in my gut that says it is possible. I like that feeling. Some more notes: --- I know it could be coach speak and I accept that, but one cant help but like the Urban Meyer comments on the Cats today. He said that he now believes that Kentucky has "upper half of the SEC" talent and that unlike when he first started scouting them in 2005, this is a team that can compete at the highest levels of the conference. First of all, he is correct, but secondly it is good to hear another coach say those words. When coaches think a team stinks, they pick out one thing they do well and praise it. Urban isnt doing that...he is saying the team is good top to bottom. Coach speak or not, you gotta like that. -- On ESPN's College Football Live, the prognosticators called the UK-Florida game the potential "big upset of the week." The guys pointed to Kentucky's strong offense and said that if Kentucky could get off to a good start (something that hasnt happened the last two weeks), they had the firepower to pull out a victory. ESPNU would certainly be rocking if that occurred. --- Lots of praise going on nationally for our man Randall Cobb today. The latest example is thisvESPN article on Cobb that suggests there may be nothing he cant do...well except take junk from a hostess at Red Lobster (although we now here he has said he will return to the fine eating establishment). --- When you think of toughness, it may be time to look at the now broken-handed Danny Trevathan. Without question, Trevathan has been the star of the Defense so far this year and his accomplishments are even more impressive considering he is playing with nagging injuries. The latest ailment is a broken hand suffered in the Akron game that will cause DT to play with a cast this weekend in Gainesville. But the defensive star will not miss time and will be able to lay the hammer, and potentially even get a lot of good signatures from local coeds. --- Finally, we had a great interview with John Calipari today on the radio show. You can listen to the Calipari interview here, or the entire show (and I think it may have been our best overall one so far) at the links on the widget below. Calipari made three interesting points: 1. He is against the one and done rule and would prefer two years in college or the baseball system. 2. He believes that AAU recruiting should be ended and all recruiting should be done with high schools to get rid of the AAU characters in the game. 3. He thinks the coaches should have more time with the players in the summer to make sure they get better and arent around agent types. All good suggestions to me. Check out the whole interview if you can. More later tonight....
