UK Fans of The Day Want Afternoon Notes

by:Thomas Beisner01/13/11
uk-fans-of-the-day-jan-13 Not a whole lot going on today in the world of UK outside of Randall Cobb's announcement that he's taking those pretty eyes and that immeasurable heart to the world of professional football.  You know what, though?  That's probably as it should be.  This is Randall Cobb's day.  Show him some love. A few notes...  - If you didn't get to see Cobb's press conference live, then simply reading the quotes can't do it justice.  Cobb's personal successes on the field and the way he seemed to always be willing his teammates to give more haven't been seen around these parts maybe ever and might not be seen again.  He was a player whose numbers, no matter how impressive, didn't tell the story of what kind of football player he was.  In his press conference this afternoon, he showed the type of character and genuineness that made him revered among his coaches and teammates.  There are talented kids and there are kids who love the program and do things the right way.  Very few - if any - do it at a level in all areas like Cobb did.  He was truly a special player.  The press conference was just another example of why.  - While it's a little surprising, it's more likely a tribute to UK's dedication and a lack of competition. Nonetheless, the ratings for the Compass Bowl were the best ever for the Birmingham Bowl and it was one of only ten of the thirty-three bowls to see an increase in viewership over last year. I hope you're paying attention, Sugar Bowl. New Orleans or bust!  - As a part of their "Content of Character" series, Joker Phillips will be on Outside the Lines to talk about the issue of black coaches in college football. Spoiler: Let's not worry about the decisions that have been made or the past. The future looks bright. - Since things are a little slow, go ahead and set your DVR for Michael Gilchrist vs. Austin Rivers tomorrow night. The game will air on ESPN2 at 7pm and two players who have traded the #1 overall spot in the class of 2011 will look to be crowned Supreme Ruler of the Recruiting Rankings.  - On a non-UK note, our good friend Bomani Jones penned a piece for ESPN.com about Martin Luther King's dream as it's applied in sports. Since it's Bomani, it's excellent. And since it's Bomani, we're going to encourage you to click over there and check itout. Finally, in case you missed it this morning, Matt and EZ were on Kentucky Sports Radio talking Randall Cobb and the future for the football program. There were laughs and there were threatened hang-ups on callers. Make sure you check it out.
