UK Fans of the Day Want Afternoon Notes

by:Thomas Beisner01/31/11
uk-fans-of-the-day-jan-28 A few notes on a pretty busy Monday afternoon...  - One the SEC Coaches Teleconference today, Coach Cal said that he's meeting with Darius Miller today to discuss taking away some of his minutes.  The decision to do so - if that's what they decide - has nothing to do with dissatisfaction with where he is at this point, though Cal did note that he still wants more.  Instead, it would be in an effort to remove what Calipari called "reverting for short spurts" in each game, which the coach attributes to being fatigued.  By giving up a few of Miller's minutes (71 combined in the last two games), the question looms as to where they go.  You would assume they wouldn't get scattered between Knight (40 last game), Liggins (36) or Lamb (31), so maybe Cal is finally seeing something from the Hood-Vargas-Poole-Polson quartet in practice.  At the very least, this is sure to excite the guy that got really angry this morning in the comments section.  - Yet again, Coach Cal talked about the need for his veterans to step up and said that "the upperclassmen must drive this team".  Cal said that in order for them to "drive" the team, they must do the little things like be vocal and aggressive and that if they aren't, then "no one is following".  By "no one", I assume he means the other three guys on the team.  More specifically, he said Josh Harrellson needs to rebound, Darius Miller needs to be strong offensively and DeAndre Liggins has to do it with defense and rebounding.  And he believes them all to be capable.  - As he tends to do, Coach Cal tried to talk up his Tuesday opponent a bit, noting that the 13-8 (1-5) Rebels "play well at home".  They're 0-3 so far in SEC play at Tad Smith Coliseum.  Nonetheless, it plays to the "respect your opponent" mantra that he's been pushing on his team this season.  - Speaking of playing at home, a quick scan of the top 5 teams in the country shows an interesting stat.  Ohio State, Kansas, Texas, Pitt and Duke combined to play seven non-conference games on the road.  I don't know how that projects historically for the tournament (we'll have to have BTI look into it), but it's interesting still.  Or not.  You can decide.   - Some potential recruiting news as five-star shooting guard Ricardo Ledo has decommitted from Providence.  Ledo, you might remember, gave a verbal to the Friars just before visits to UK and U of L and was believed to be a major target for both.  He also recently transferred to Notre Dame Prep. - After Fox Sports' Andrew Bone (heh heh heh) said last night that three-star wide receiver Darryl Collins had re-committed to Alabama and would grayshirt, Aaron Cordero of Aaron's UK Football Blog said he's hearing that Collins committed to the Cats over the weekend.  If that's indeed the case, getting a guy to flip from Bama to UK would be worthy of celebration alone.  He's a Tee Martin target, so that's even sweeter.   - White outs.  Red outs.  Pretty much anything fits the marketing bill when UK is coming to town.  As is the case with UK's season-ending game in Knoxville as Bruce Pearl announced that Allan Houston's jersey will be retired prior to the UK game March 6.  Celebratory BBQ at Bruce Pearl's house to follow. - Ever wondered what a Duke themed basketball site would look like if it had all the technical bells and whistles of Kentucky Sports Radio?  Wonder no more.  Here it is. In case you missed the show today, lots of goodness was captured in the podcast.  Dustin broke news of a basketball commitment and there was a lot of football and basketball talk.  Always a good recipe.
