UK football finishes up first full scrimmage

by:David Jackson04/07/12
UK hit the gridiron today in the first full scrimmage of the spring. The first-team defense went against the first-team offense, followed by the second-team offense against the second-team defense. I always get worried about scrimmages against your own team because if the offense does well, I worry about the defense and vice versa, but I digress. Sophomores Maxwell Smith (quarterback) and Raymond Sanders (running back) stole the show on offense. Smith threw for 228 yards, including a 51-yard strike to senior wideout E.J. Fields. Sanders rushed 13 times for 73 yards. First-team linebackers Alvin Dupree and Avery Williamson each recorded two sacks in the scrimmage. That is great news considering they'll be relied heavily upon to help fill the void left by Danny Trevathan. The defenses combined for 14 sacks in the 116-play scrimmage. Joker Phillips feels the same way I do about the defense's ability to get to the quarterback. He knows it doesn't bode well for the Wildcats' young offensive line. He noted that he's making it a goal for this team to give up just one sack for every 20 passing plays. The 'Cats will have another spring practice on Wednesday before suiting up for their second full scrimmage next Saturday. The Spring Game will be April 21st at 6 p.m. I can't wait to see what we do to Tennessee this year now that we have a quarterback. Go 'Cats
