Unusual Suspects Continued: Angel Nunez Part I

by:Dustin Rumbaugh11/27/09
"Outside of  some of the recruits we've heard a lot about so far, who are some of the other recruits on UK's radar?"  That question is posed to me on a near weekly basis. Continuing our look at some of the other prospects that UK is keeping an eye on, we'll now turn our attention to the 2011 class. Outside of Mike Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and possibly Quincy Miller, the average UK fan probably doesn't have the greatest feel for who else is garnering some of the Cats' attention. Angel Nunez is a prospect getting a significant amount of UK's interest at this time. Here's a little more on Angel: Angel Nunez Wing forward checking in at around 6'7" and 190 lbs. Ranking: #13 SF, #59 overall (Rivals.com); #11 SF, #47 overall (Scout.com) Scouting: Based on his Dominican heritage, game and interest from Louisville, a lot of scouts like to compare Nunez to Francisco Garcia. Nunez has a nice stroke to his jumper and is a kid with a ton of length. Has a knack for getting himself to the rim and finishing with finesse. Nunez is a smooth, agile wing who uses his quickness of the dribble to break down his defenders and get to the hoop. (Two of the shortest clips I'll ever link for you) The Skinny: I knew going into this that I'd probably catch a little flak for calling Angel Nunez an "unusual suspect" based on his near visit to Lexington for UK's midnight madness. The fact of the matter though is that he remains one of the lesser known 2011 recruits amongst UK fans. His visit has now been rescheduled for early January during the UK/UL game which shows that things are still very much on between Nunez and the Cats. Nunez is another member of the NY Gaucho's AAU program, a favorite breeding ground for UK prospects since fellow Gaucho-alums Orlando Antigua and Rod Strickland took over the recruiting reigns. Other schools showing interest in Nunez include Arizona, UConn, Louisville and West Virginia, all of whom have offered Nunez at this point. * Part II will be an interview I recently had with Angel, discussing his current situation along with how he currently views the Cats.
