Wan'Dale Robinson: How Kentucky Replaces the New York Giant

Kentucky playmaker Wan’Dale Robinson was selected in the second round by the New York Giants with pick No. 43 in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Wan’Dale Robinson returned home to Kentucky and enjoyed one of the most dynamic seasons in school history. The receiver was properly utilized under Mark Stoops after being mismanaged by Scott Frost at Nebraska. The Lexington Herald-Leader Sports Figure of the Year won the hearts of the BBN with his toughness and big play abilities. UK had lacked receiver production for quite some time before the Frankfort product burst onto the scene with 104 receptions and 1,334 yards in 2021. Robinson saved his best for last after catching 10 passes for 170 yards in a thrilling Citrus Bowl win over Iowa.

Let’s be honest, UK had an unhealthy reliance on Wan’Dale Robinson in the passing game. Everybody in the stadium knew Will Levis was targeting the pass-catcher, yet opposing defenses had no answer defending the All-SEC performer. With that said, it’s highly unlikely that the Wildcats will have an individual receiver with Wan’Dale Robinson type numbers in 2022.

Kentucky will replace Robinson with another Robinson. Virginia Tech transfer Tayvion Robinson enjoyed a productive career in Blacksburg after catching 113 career passes for 1,555 yards, and 9 touchdowns. A true slot receiver, Tayvion Robinson brings a plethora of game experience to a receiver room that is lacking in that category.

What Does All This Mean?

Wan’Dale Robinson produced one of the most magical seasons for a receiver in UK history. Replacing his production will likely come from multiple players. Tayvion Robinson will be the starter and is a schematic fit. However, I expect quarterback Will Levis to spread the football around to more pass catchers in 2022.

Wan’Dale Robinson’s one year as a Wildcat was worth the wait. His toughness and unselfish play served as an example for younger players and fit offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s intent. Replacing the hometown, fan-favorite will come from a group rather than one single player. But, Tayvion Robinson is a capable and strategically significant transfer with experience at the slot position.
