WATCH: KSR's Inside Access at Kroger Game of the Week

Frederick Douglass may be the best team in Kentucky. I’ve seen the Broncos twice this season and they’ve been dominant in both wins over state-powers Scott County and Boyle County. The Broncos beat a very good Rebel team 37-6 in the Kroger KSR Game of the Week last Friday.

Instead of writing about the action on the field, I thought I’d bring you inside KSR to get an understanding of how we cover Kroger KSR Games of the Week. Our selection process is a corporate secret. Once identified, I contact the host school AD to make coordination for Friday’s event. We have some rules. KSR never takes away from local media. In fact, we support and promote it. We don’t take up a spot in the press box and operate from field level. That may sound strange, but again, we support local media and don’t take away seats in the box that’s normally occupied by local outlets.

So, after the Douglass-Boyle County game was picked and coordinated with the host school, I sent a text to the KSR team to alert them of the location and participating teams. After that, a graphic was manufactured by KSR and On3 video/graphic producer Brent Wainscott featuring the two teams. After that, I write the announcement posts on Monday.

This week was different. KSR interns Brady Byrdwell and Daniel Hager were assigned teams in the same game. They both produced posts about each team leading up to kickoff, provided social media content during the game, and wrote recaps. You can read their work here.

Normally, one intern comes with me to the Game of the Week and the other goes to a different game to provide content for a supporting post. KSR’s high school football specialist Troy Howell was at the game and provided his excellent insight, as well. Our recruiting insider and writer, Zack Geoghegan, was on the sideline covering the game from a recruiting perspective. Zack also coordinates and oversees KSR interns. Oh yeah, Ryan Lemond was also in the house.

Steven Peake has been a game-changer at KSR. If you aren’t familiar with Steven, he’s our website’s new video director. He records all the video content you can see on KSR’s YouTube channel and produces our podcasts.

Steven and I are normally at the stadium early to discuss our strategy and Friday was no different. I got to Boyle County at 5:00 PM and Steven rolled in about 5:30 for the 7:30 kickoff. We discussed our plan for the night and I never saw him again. Steven was all over the field and stands to help paint the contest’s picture in terms of performers and unique atmospheres. He’s really good at his job. You can see Steven’s video below.

As you can hopefully see, football Fridays are an all-hands-on-deck operation for KSR. We had eight folks at the game and two covering from home. Drew Franklin and Tyler Thompson watched the game on Boyle County’s student broadcasting outlet and provided top coverage in terms of coordinating resources/personnel and editing posts. I hope you enjoyed the production. All of this is possible thanks to Kroger.

Both Douglass and Boyle County are poised for long runs in the playoffs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both at Kroger Field in a few weeks.

Kroger is a staple in your hometown community just like high school football. There’s nothing quite like Friday nights in the Bluegrass. We are honored to share this journey with Kroger and you for the third consecutive season.
