WATCH: Spencer County Fed Us Well, Defeated Shelby County 56-28 in Kroger KSR Game of the Week

2022 is our third year in the Kroger KSR Game of the Week series. If you can’t tell, I’ve loved every minute of it, and thank Kroger for the opportunity. Host schools and communities have welcomed the KSR crew in all games that we’ve covered. But, Spencer County hit different. It was obvious that the home team was eager to impress on the big stage. They didn’t disappoint.

I was greeted with a new twist. Once Spencer County learned of their game being selected, the school’s leadership planned a “Game Day” type pep rally before the matchup. I walked onto the baseball field before six o’clock for a 7:30 kickoff and I immediately felt the energy from the band, cheerleaders, dance team, administrators, fans, and students. Head coach and AD Mike Marksbury spoke to the crowd and it got really loud. I even fired up the attendees, or at least I tried. Very cool atmosphere.

Much like Mayfield and Raceland and other hosts, Spencer County fed us well. Matter of fact, the school set up a media room just for KSR. Pork sandwiches and local cookies were on the menu. I’m easily influenced by food and the Bears won the night in that category.

The stands were packed for the actual game. Cars lined up on the side of the road overlooking the stadium in order to get a view of the on-field action. Fireworks exploded above a giant American flag following touchdowns. All this made for a pristine and exciting environment for a high school football game.

Spencer County didn’t start playing football until 2004. Coach Marksbury took over in 2011. The Bears were coming off an 18-game losing streak but have grown under the head coach. His squad is now 10-1 and will play Franklin County in round two of the statewide playoffs. The experience was incredible. The hospitality couldn’t have been better.

KSR intern Daniel Hager was also at the game and wrote about Spencer County’s big 56-28 win over Shelby County, which you can read here

Bradley McKee produced this week’s video with Steven Peake traveling to Missouri for the Kentucky football game. B-Roll is awesome; you can see his work below.

Spencer County was eager to impress on Friday night. They did so in a huge way. I hadn’t been to Taylorsville before and enjoyed my time there. I hope we can go back someday. Well done, Bears.

Kroger is a staple in your hometown community just like high school football. There’s nothing quite like Friday nights in the Bluegrass. We are honored to share this journey with Kroger and you for the third consecutive season.
