Welcome back to All-Star weekend in the baseball world everybody.

The eyes of the media are fixated up in Denver in hopes to see Shohei Ohtani launch a ball 700 feet into the razor-thin air at Coors Field. Since the actual game doesn’t mean anything anymore in terms of postseason implications, it can genuinely be seen as a waste of time in some regard. It doesn’t help that people are now dropping out left and right of the event and making it feel like the NFL Pro Bowl, which nobody cares to watch. Good thing it’s not the only important thing going on in the baseball world this weekend.

Running simultaneously with the Home Run Derby and All-Star festivities this year is the MLB draft, which is set to kick off later today. It’s an incredibly unique opportunity for the MLB to see how this plays out. The first week of June has always been the default date for the draft every year but the implications and consequences of COVID-19 pushed it back until this weekend and gives the MLB a year to test if this is a more beneficial system in terms of ratings. There should be a group of Bat ‘Cats that hear their names get called throughout the three-day event despite not getting a single call in last year’s five-round draft.

One should be T.J. Collett, who’s had some experience of his own mashing dingers in a home run derby atmosphere. It seems so long ago now but Collett was a participant in the 2019 College Home Run Derby where he finished fourth with 16 home runs in a couple of rounds. Wherever T.J. ends up after this weekend, it’ll always be a good time watching him crush balls into right field.
