Kentucky football legend Tim Couch etched his name in the Southeastern Conference’s record books for single-season passing yards when he threw for 4,275 yards in 1998. That record stood for 21 years, until LSU quarterback Joe Burrow surpassed that mark Saturday night.

Burrow eclipsed Couch’s mark early in the third quarter in the Tigers’ rout of Texas A&M. At the start of the game, LSU’s quarterback needed 261 yards for the record. Following an incredible 231-yard first half performance, Burrow started the second half just as strong. He tossed an 11-yarder with 12:17 left in the third quarter to make the record officially his.

After the record-breaking night for LSU, Couch responded with a sincere message for the man who surpassed him. The former Wildcat congratulated the current Tiger and offered him some well-wishes for the remainder of his season. The LSU football account shared the message on their Twitter.

In the video, Couch says he’s been “real proud of that record,” but Burrow is “so well-deserving” of the title. Couch also says he’s really enjoyed watching the Tigers play this year, and he hopes Burrow and his teammates are able to take their team all the way to the ultimate finish line.

“Best of luck to you the rest of the year, and I hope you can cap off this record-breaking season with a National Championship,” Couch said. “Good luck to you, Joe!”
