Martha Layne Collins High School was established in 2010. Jerry Lucas has been the head coach since the beginning and led the Titans to the 3A state title in 2013. Quite an amazing accomplishment for the young school.

I made my first trip to Collins on Friday. Athletics Director Kate Tucker was tremendous in assisting KSR with coordination and access for the game. She’s a Cardinal. I’m a Wildcat. We jokingly put the Governor’s Cup rivalry to the side and focused on promoting both programs in the Kroger KSR Game of the Week. Woodford County came out on top 41-28

Woodford County is 8-0 and looks the part of a potential state championship team. The Yellow Jackets are coached by KHSAA and UK legend Dennis Johnson. His squad is loaded with elite skill players and a stout line of scrimmage. Woodford County appears to be on a collision course to meet Frederick Douglass at some point in the 5A playoff with the winner potentially being named champion. Big-time players made big-time plays. Sophomore QB Andrew Nason exploded for a 74-yard TD run. Aden Nelson caught a screen pass and ran 26-yards for a score. Super-sophomore Makhi Smith got in on the action. Stacey Preston provided power. The Yellow Jackets have lost one game in two years.

6-2 Collins is led by a superstar in the making, Kenyon Goodin. The Mr. Football candidate racked up 363 total yards and four touchdowns. He also registered seven tackles and two interceptions while playing defense. Goodin has registered over 2,300 total yards of offense and has accounted for 31 touchdowns in seven games this season. He’s as good as advertised and I was quite impressed. If you get a chance, go watch this kid play.

Collins’ facilities were extremely well-kept and beautifully branded with the school’s colors and logo. The school was on fall break but that didn’t damper the home crowd. The visiting Yellow Jackets traveled extremely well also. If college coaches read this column, you might want to get a copy of this tape. There were several high-level athletes on the field. This game was fun, fast-paced, and filled with talent.

Again, thanks to Kate Tucker and the Collins staff for a wonderful visit. Check out KSR’s video recap from the game below.
