It was a slow start for most of Calipari’s recruits, until Wendell Carter took the court.  The 6’10” center scored 30 points on 13-17 shooting.  He pulled in 16 rebounds and blocked 3 shots in a one-point win.

Even more impressively, he did it all against DeAndre Ayton, the 7-foot #1 player in America.  Carter, the #4 player in the 247 Composite Rankings, has impressed scouts as of late, dropping some pounds and bringing more energy to the table.  That paid off defensively, holding Ayton to only 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Those who love to follow recruiting know him well, but the casual fan is familiar with his recruitment because he’s choosing between Kentucky, Duke and Harvard.

Here are some of Carter’s highlights from the last EYBL stop in Hampton, Va.

Early Results from Other UK Recruits:

Trae Young:  Kentucky’s point guard prospect had a fantastic first game.  His stat line was impressive — 23 points on 55% shooting, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals — but I was more impressed by the name of the team he beat, Playaz Basketball Academy.

PJ Washington had a so-so game with 11 points, 5 rebounds in a 15-point win.

Gary Trent Jr. was on the same sauce as Hamidou Diallo.  Trent Jr. had a 5-23 shooting performance, missing all nine three-point attempts in a nine-point loss to CIA Bounce.  He finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist.
