Where Daimion Collins' wingspan ranks in the Calipari Era

On Saturday, Kentucky secured a commitment from 2021 five-star forward Daimion Collins. If you know anything about the 6’10” Texas native so far, it’s probably that Jai Lucas was his lead recruiter and he has really long arms. Like, ridiculously long. Collins told KSR back in October he has a 7’5″ wingspan, which is pretty incredible for an 18-year-old kid who might still be growing.

How does Collins’ 7’5″ wingspan compare to other players in the John Calipari era at Kentucky? I spent the morning looking up former Cats’ measurements from past NBA Draft Combines (Karl-Anthony Towns didn’t participate in the combine, so I relied on Google for his). Per these numbers, Collins will have the third longest wingspan in the Calipari era, assuming it doesn’t shrink before he gets to Lexington.

  • DeMarcus Cousins – 7’5.75″
  • Anthony Davis – 7’5.5″
  • Daimion Collins – 7’5″*
  • Nick Richards – 7’5*
  • Karl-Anthony Towns – 7’4″*
  • Daniel Orton – 7’4.25″
  • Nerlens Noel – 7’3.75″
  • Willie Cauley-Stein – 7’3″
  • Marcus Lee – 7’3″
  • Bam Adebayo – 7’2.75″
  • Skal Labissiere – 7’2.5″
  • Dontaie Allen – 7’2.5″*
  • PJ Washington – 7’2.5″
  • Terrence Jones – 7’2.25″
  • Dakari Johnson – 7’2″
  • Nate Sestina – 7’2″*
  • Enes Kanter – 7’1.5″
  • Trey Lyles – 7’1.5″
  • Patrick Patterson – 7’1.25″
  • Keion Brooks – 7’1″*
  • Julius Randle – 7’0″
  • Michael Kidd-Gilchrist – 7’0″
  • Hamidou Diallo – 6’11.25″

It tough to find reliable numbers for players prior to 2000, but other notable wingspans in Kentucky Basketball history include:

  • Shagari Alleyne – 8’0″
  • Jamaal Magloire – 7’6″
  • Jules Camara – 7’2.25″
  • Tayshaun Prince – 7’2″
  • Tony Delk – 7’2″
  • Rajon Rondo – 6’9″

Remember, Delk and Rondo are both only 6’1″.

Just for fun, here are the longest wingspans in NBA history:

  • Manute Bol – 8’6″
  • Tacko Fall – 8’2.25″
  • Mohamed Bamba – 7’10”
  • Walter Tavares – 7’9″
  • Mouhamed Sene – 7’8.5″
  • Rudy Gobert – 7’8.5″
  • Chris Marcus – 7’8″
  • Zhou Qi – 7’7.75″
  • Jason Jennings, Hassan Whiteside, Bol Bol – 7’7″

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but it’ll be fun to have a freak of nature back on the roster.

UPDATE: Shoutout to the commenters for asking about Nick Richards. We’ve yet to see his numbers from this year’s combine, but his wingspan measured 7’5″ at UK’s Pro Day last fall. I added his numbers in, along with a few others, including Dontaie Allen, who has a wingspan of 7’2.5″, which is pretty impressive for a 6’6″ guard.
