Woodford County standout John McCrear — who also happens to be Vince Marrow’s nephew — has committed to Murray State.

The 6-foot-8 forward out of Lexington chose the Racers over the likes of Akron, Kent State and Youngstown State, though other high-major interest has ramped up in recent weeks.

Why Murray State?

“Just the fact that it felt right,” the in-state standout said. ”It felt natural, it felt like that’s where I wanted to be from the jump, and I couldn’t get that visit out of my head.”

He took an official visit to Murray State last week, a trip that resulted in a scholarship offer from the school.

McCrear recently heard from the likes of North Carolina State, Louisville, Ohio State and Cincinnati. Rather than exploring those options, though, the standout forward felt Murray State was the best option for his future.

“I knew that Murray State had a plan for me off the rip,” he said. ”They want to build me into the player that they know I can be, and just enhance my chances of being in the league.”

What is he looking to improve about his game to close out his high school career and going into college?

“Really, just trying to open up my outside game a little bit,” said McCrear. ”Right now I’m know as the big 6-foot-9 kid that posts up, rebounds, and blocks shots. I want to be known as a versatile player in his game and if they need me to switch on a guard, I can do that, or take advantage of a big that’s slow on their feet.”

McCrear is the nephew of Kentucky football assistant coach Vince Marrow, who congratulated the newest Racer following his commitment to the program.

With his connection to the University of Kentucky, the Woodford County standout took an unofficial visit to Lexington back in June of 2021.

Fast forward one year later, and McCrear is a Murray State Racer.
