LSU head coach Brian Kelly will have to replace another on-field staff member in Baton Rouge.

On Saturday, On3’s Matt Zenitz reported LSU defensive line coach Jamar Cain is set to take a job with the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos, who hired former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton this offseason, are bringing Cain on as a pass rush specialist.

Cain spent just one season in Baton Rouge. Cain previously coached at Oklahoma, and he was set to follow Lincoln Riley to Southern Cal before being offered the defensive line job by Kelly at LSU. Cain is now set to work under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.

Cain began his coaching career in 2004 at Sacramento City College, his former stomping grounds. He finished up his playing days at New Mexico State in 2002 after a transfer.

Cain had a variety of assistant coaching roles on the defensive line through 2019 season with Sacramento, Ohio, Missouri State, Cal Poly, Wyoming, North Dakota State, Fresno State and Arizona State.

In 2020, Cain was hired by Riley at Oklahoma and coached outside linebackers and defensive ends for two years until going back to defensive line with LSU in 2022. Cain won two FCS National Championships while with North Dakota State.

The news of Cain’s departure comes shortly after Kelly announced the promotion of defensive analyst John Jancek. Jancek, who has worked with Kelly before, served as a defensive analyst in 2022 before moving into an on-field role this offseason. Jancek is set to coach the outside linebackers and is the team’s new special teams coordinator. Cain coached the outside linebackers this past season, while Brian Polian led the special teams unit. Following the season, Polian transitioned into an off-field role on the staff.

During Cain’s one year at LSU, he signed a defensive line class that was headlined by five-star edge rusher Dashawn Womack.

Now, Kelly will be looking to hire a new defensive line coach to lead the Tigers into the 2023 season.

The news of Cain’s departure comes in the middle of the program’s spring practices.
