The LSU football staff has 22 commitments in for the 2023 recruiting class, which gives the Tigers the No. 6 class on the On3 Consensus Team Rankings.

On the list of commitments are a pair of five-star prospects out of Louisiana in offensive tackle Zalance Heard and wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. Heard is ranked by On3 as the No. 15 recruit in America, while Sampson checks in at No. 20 overall.

Not far behind the pair is another LSU commitment in Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy four-star EDGE Dashawn Womack, who committed to LSU on July 4.

Womack is ranked as the No. 28 overall recruit in the 2023 class, which puts him firmly inside five-star range once the rankings expand to 32 five-stars. Currently, there are only 23 five-stars – putting Womack within five spots of striking distance to adding his fifth star.

Given teams from around the country are trying to flip the Maryland native away from LSU, Womack offered up some reassurance to Tigers fans hoping he sticks until National Signing Day.

“What’s different from before is that I have committed to them,” Womack told On3 National Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons. “I showed that I committed to them, so they don’t have to worry about other schools trying to get me. Schools are still trying to come in and get me, telling me to flip.”

Womack circled Georgia and Ole Miss as two notable teams still in pursuit, and the nation’s No. 5 EDGE rusher told Simmons he still talks to coaches out of respect, but emphasizes that he is locked in with LSU. Womack told On3 that he speaks with the Tigers’ coaches every other day, including after his practices and games.

Next up on the calendar: a trip to LSU to see his first game in Tiger Stadium on Oct. 22 as the Tigers face off against Ole Miss.

“It just felt like home,” Womack said about why he chose LSU. “It just feel(s) like, I don’t even know how to explain it. I fit right in with the other players. I fit with in the staff and I can fit the defense, of course.”

“I watch the guys at my position and see how they play, how they run through the plays and stuff like that. I just envision myself making those plays.”

LSU’s coaches, culture and environment are three reasons why Womack has stood firm behind his pledge to LSU, and the win-loss record this season doesn’t weigh as heavily as the importance of the foundation the new staff is building in Baton Rouge.

“Of course, they’re gonna have a struggle,” Womack said. “It’s a new coach, so it’s something new. They(‘re) just bringing it all together.”
