LSU’s opponent for the 2023 season opener has landed a player that both programs were recruiting out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Former South Carolina defensive lineman Gilber Edmond has committed to Florida State.

Edmond had made a two-day stay in Baton Rouge this past weekend, which came on the heels of visits to both Florida and Florida State.

The Florida native left the Sunshine State in the 2020 class and signed with the Gamecocks.

As a true freshman, Edmond took a redshirt while appearing in the final two games of the season against Kentucky and Georgia, logging a tackle in both games.

Edmond worked his way into more playing time as a redshirt freshman in 2021, appearing in seven games for South Carolina.

By the 2022 season, the redshirt sophomore was a constant on the field for the Gamecocks. Edmond finished the year with 10 starts in 12 games played, logging 39 tackles, nine tackles for loss and two sacks.

Edmond will be a third-year sophomore in the fall, giving him multiple years of eligibility remaining in Tallahassee.

Even before the pursuit of Edmond, LSU had already announced four defensive line additions from the transfer portal in Oregon EDGE rusher Bradyn Swinson, Arizona defensive end Paris Shand, West Virginia defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson and Florida defensive tackle Jalen Lee.

The Tigers have landed eight total players through the portal.

“This group helps fill some immediate needs for our team,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said. “Our staff did a great job of vetting each of these players to make sure they fit our program, not only from an ability standpoint, but more importantly, ensuring they are high character young men who are committed to academics.

“It’s important that when you add transfers to your roster, they have the traits we are looking for as we continue our mission to Graduate Champions. Along with the outstanding group of freshmen we signed (in December), we feel with this group of young men will significantly improve our roster for the present and the future of LSU football.”
