The LSU football team was back on the practice fields Tuesday after a week off for spring break.

The media was able to view 20 minutes at the start of the morning practice, which included the team working through individual position drills.

The Bengal Tiger staff was on hand, and the video below includes a look at an LSU quarterback room that includes three scholarship players in Jayden Daniels, Garrett Nussmeier and Rickie Collins.

After transferring in from Arizona State a year ago, Daniels took over as LSU’s starter and led the Tigers to an SEC West title and 10-win season.

Daniels mulled over the opportunity to enter the NFL Draft, but instead chose to return to college for a fifth and final season next fall.

“When Jayden made the decision to come back, there were a number of things that were on the table for discussion,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said on Tuesday. “You start with the physical development, looking at how we can put together a plan for his strength and conditioning. Part of this is we had to recruit him back, we had to give him a comprehensive plan about what we were gonna do in the weight room, how we were gonna continue to develop him technically as a quarterback, all of those pieces.

“Then utilizing the resources we have here. We have VR, the ability to train year round, having receivers here for him. It was really having a year round training program for him right here and then providing him the opportunity to do other things as well,” Kelly said. “He went out on the west coast to train with other elite quarterbacks, providing him the contacts to do that. I think more than anything else it was continuing the development of a quarterback that’s in that stage. When we’re able to meet and he saw we had a comprehensive plan, I think it helped him make his decision.”

The Bengal Tiger staff also focused in on the JACK linebackers during Tuesday’s practice film mashup. With new LSU outside linebackers coach John Jancek taking over the position this spring, the staff is looking to find a replacement for 2022’s starter in BJ Ojulari.

“There are young players in there and we brought in an experienced transfer in Ovie Oghoufo, who has played a lot of that position in a similar role at Texas,” Kelly said. “We felt like him and Bradyn Swinson added some veteran presence to go with the young players and that was the mix we were looking for.

“Ovie has been really good as a mentor to some of the players right away and some of the young players have been further along than we thought. That will be a position that continues to evolve, but we wanted someone coaching that position on a full-time basis because it’s hard for the defensive line coach to break down all of the responsibilities of that position when you’re coaching the interior guys as well.”
