Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic wide receiver Shelton Sampson committed to LSU in August, giving the Tigers yet another elite pass catcher in the 2023 recruiting class. On Friday, he showed why he’s a five-star for On3 and one of the most coveted prospects in America.

Sampson made play after play as his Bears faced off against Montgomery (Ala.) Carver, coming away with a 42-36 win. Sampson put the game on ice with a big, one-handed 3rd and long reception on top of his many catches on the night.

Carver needed a way to slow down Sampson, but it didn’t work as well as the visitors thought it would. 2023 five-star EDGE Qua Russaw was matched up on Sampson in the redzone, but Sampson beat him clean for the score. Russaw ranks as a five-star on On3 and the On3 Consensus. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Alabama the edge for the nation’s No. 19 overall prospect.

Check out the clip below from WBRZ, which shows Shelton Sampson beating Russaw for the touchdown at the :30 mark.

Shelton Sampson scouting report

“Big-play wide receiver with one of the best combinations of vertical speed and catch radius in the 2023 cycle. Clocked a sub 4.4-second 40-yard dash at 6-foot-4 prior to his junior season. Uses that speed to create separation on downfield routes with regularity. Pairs the long speed with advanced ball skills.

“Shows the ability to leap over defenders to high-point the ball in contested situations. Comes down with some fantastic one-handed and diving grabs. A younger prospect for the cycle who continues to show improvement over time.”

Shelton Sampson Jr. ranks as the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 33 overall prospect, per the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3 ranks him as the No. 20 overall prospect and No. 4 overall wide receiver prospect.
