Shreveport (La.) Byrd High School Class of 2024 PK Abram Murray got a good chance to learn all about the Miami Hurricanes program in the last few months.

He was on hand for the April Spring Game at Miami and got a campus tour. Then he participated in the June 11 Mario Cristobal camp, earning a Miami offer, his first.

And he was back July 30 for the UM recruit barbecue and pool party. He brought along his parents for that trip.

Now?

He’s seen and heard enough.

And Murray is on board as the kicker in Miami’s Class of 2024. He’s the top-rated kicker in Kohl’s kicker rankings in his class.

“His leg strength is at the top of the class on both field goals and kick-offs,” Kohl’s camps wrote in Murray’s bio. “At the Underclassman Challenge in January of 2022, he won the camp-wide kick-off competition. The ball jumps off his foot and he is in great control of his body. Murray can drive the ball or hang the ball up as he has charted a 4.3+ second kickoff at camp. He has quick hips and has excellent command of his swing through contact. In May of 2022 he scored 13 of 15 FG points on field goals and averaged 120.3 points on kick-offs.”

Murray will arrive at Miami when current kicker Andres Borregales is a junior, so he can compete to start that year and also handle kickoffs, something that’s not a strength for Borregales.

I’m super exited between the staff and program, everything they are building.

Of note: This coming season will be the first year that Murray competes in games as a kicker – he was the backup to his older brother, who signed with Temple, the last two years.

It was Marwan Maalouf and Danny Kalter that have handled Murray’s recruitment and helped win him over.

“He just wants me to continue to get better, work on my craft, keep enjoying the process,” Murray said.

Murray’s other early offer is from Arkansas.

“I’m super exited between the staff and program, everything they are building (at Miami),” Murray said.

Murray says UM coaches have recruited him for over a year, including the prior staff.

He was simply ready to lock up his spot at the place he knew he wanted to play college ball.

“We’ve already been through this process for a while now,” Murray said. “It’s all about my family – I wanted them to come and see the campus, the coaches.”

The family gave their blessing, and the result was this commitment.

“The coaches and staff created a great environment to get to know the whole staff and other recruits on a more personal level (on the visit July 30),” Murray said. “All these top recruits and amazing coaches made it feel like I was at a pool party with my family.”

CaneSport’s take

This is a great pickup on special teams, and Murray has a strong leg. His career long in non-rush situations? “I made it from 68 yards in a camp,” he says. So yeah, we like this early 2024 addition.
