Durral Brooks, the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan in the 2024 class, has committed to Michigan, he told TheWolverine.com and announced on social media Sunday night. The Grand Rapids Catholic Central point guard held offers from Michigan State, Butler, Dayton, and others.

Michigan first offered Brooks last May, coming after an offer from MSU a few months earlier. The 6-2 standout, No. 117 in the On3.com industry rankings that take all major recruiting services into account, averaged 20.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per game for Catholic Central. He made 37 percent of his triples, though he didn’t attempt many shots from beyond the arc.

The highlight of his season came in January, when Brooks scored 43 points in a win over Wayland (Mich.) High. He made 16-of-22 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free throw line without attempting a single three-pointer.

“He needs to tighten the jump shot, be more consistent there, which will open up his entire game,” On3.com’s Jamie Shaw said of Brooks. “But he is a physical guard with good length. At 6-1 or 6-2, he uses a crafty change of pace to touch the paint. While he lacks top end burst, he plays with confidence and his head up.”

And he’s solid at 185 pounds.

“Brooks can absorb contact in the paint, getting his body into the defender and creating angles. He gives effort on defense, guarding the ball and the passing lanes,” Shaw continued. “He is best defending the ball in the half court rather than the open floor and at his best with the ball, when he is able to get into the paint. He’s a good passer in traffic and in the pick and roll.”

“Phat Phat” as he’s called averaged around 13 points and 6.5 assists per game as a sophomore and helped lead Catholic Central to a state title as a frosh. He has a relationship with former Michigan guard Kobe Bufkin and has been on campus for a football game. Bufkin was the one who showed him around campus.

Brooks was a first team D2 all-state selection last year. He joins Oak Hill Academy (formerly Atlanta Lovett) point guard Christian Anderson in the ’24 recruiting class.
