The Michigan football community has given senior defensive end Gabe Newburg an outpouring of support following the loss of his father, Scott, over the weekend.

Scott Newburg was a Ball State University graduate who went on to teach at Clayton (Ohio) Northmont, his high school alma mater, and served as the varsity wrestling coach for 33 years.

“As I don’t how to even say this, the world lost a hero [Sunday],” Gabe wrote. “My dad passed away [Sunday] at 4:49 p.m. He was my best friend and lit up every room he walked into. I will miss him every second of my life. With all this moving so fast, my dad and beautiful mother did everything they could financially to raise seven kids off a high school teacher/coaching salary. We have set up a Venmo to help with viewing and funeral costs. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated. God bless. I love you dad.”

Anyone interested in donating to the Scott Newburg Memorial can do so via Venmo: @scottnewburg-memorial. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 26 from 4-7 p.m. at the Northmont High School gymnasium.

Legacy, impact and no regrets

From one of Scott’s former students: “In 1987, I tried out for the 7th grade basketball team and didn’t make it… I decided to try wrestling without knowing anything about the sport. It was young Newburg’s first year coaching. He moved up to high school HC my sophomore year, and remained for over 30 years. He has a lot to do with the love and passion I have for our sport to this day. Rest easy Coach.”

Scott Newburg in an earlier Northmont Athletics post: “It has been a great time over the 33 years coaching wrestling.  I had many great kids, assistant coaches and parents during my coaching career. It has been a pleasure coaching and I would not have changed anything.”
