Michigan coach Sherrone Moore removes offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore didn’t wait long to make changes to his coaching staff after a disappointing 7-5 season. Moore let offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell go even after the Wolverines beat Ohio State in Columbus.

“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction,” said Moore in a statement. “This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors.”
Tight ends coach Steve Casula will serve as interim offensive coordinator in the meantime while Moore conducts a national search for Campbell’s replacement.
The move doesn’t come as a surprise. It was rumored that Moore would make a change after the Wolverines landed Bryce Underwood, the nation’s top overall prospect (and No. 1 quarterback), last month. Michigan will likely attempt to diversify the offense more to fit his skill set, including a much better passing game.

Campbell arrived at Michigan from Old Dominion, where he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2020 and 2021. In 2021, Campbell helped the Monarchs average 28.5 points per game and 385.4 yards per contest — before that, he was an offensive analyst at Penn State from 2017 to 2019. He was hired last February with offensive line coach Grant Newsome.
“Kirk and Grant are two bright offensive minds,” Moore said at the time. “They have brought a lot to our offensive staff and will make even larger contributions in their new roles. I am excited to have Kirk and Grant take on greater responsibilities in our offense as they continue working with our players to help further their development on and off the field.”
But the confidence waned as the season progressed. Moore insisted he wasn’t going to take over play calling duties, but it was clear he wasn’t pleased with the offense near the end of the season. Though former quarterback J.J. McCarthy praised Campbell as his quarterbacks coach, the Wolverines struggled to move the ball this year after his promotion and lacked an identity much of the year.
