Report claims Blake Corum done for 2022 season, will have surgery
Michigan football junior running back Blake Corum is expected to undergo knee surgery that could end his 2022, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Rapoport says that he is expected to make a full recovery.
Corum suffered the knee injury in the game against Illinois on Nov. 19 and was taken out of the contest after a 2nd-half carry. He attempted to give it a go at Ohio State last weekend, but was limited to 2 carries and sat out the rest of the game.
Michigan has leaned on Corum throughout the year. He has led an elite rushing offense thanks to 1,463 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Heading into the week of the Illinois game, he was also considered one of the leaders in the clubhouse for the Heisman Trophy.
The keys to the run game now lies in the hands of sophomore Donovan Edwards, who had 216 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns in last week’s 45-23 win over Ohio State. He is dealing with an injury himself, wearing a cast on his right hand during the Ohio State game. Michigan’s other backfield options include freshman CJ Stokes, sophomore Tavierre Dunlap and junior walk-on Isaiah Gash.
There is an outside shot Corum could be ready for the College Football Playoff, namely the national title game should the Wolverines advance that far. To comment on any timeline might be premature, but Rapoport’s update is as conclusive as it gets. It remains to be seen if Corum will leave early for the NFL or not, casting doubt on his future at Michigan.
Michigan takes on Purdue on Saturday in the Big Ten Championship game and will now do so without its best player the rest of the way. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:17 p.m. ET on FOX.
