There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

The Rich Rodriguez days are not fond ones for Michigan Wolverines football fans to reflect upon. The Maize and Blue went 15-22 during Rodriguez’s three seasons at the helm from 2008-10 and only made one bowl game.

But there was a couple memorable games, with the 2010 win over Illinois being among them. Michigan and the Fighting Illini combined for 62 points at halftime of the 67-65, triple-overtime Wolverine win. With 62 days until the 2022 season, we naturally take a look back at the crazy contest.

The scoring wasn’t anywhere close to being done when the two teams combined to hit the 62 mark at the half, standing tied at 31-31, the most points Michigan its opponent have put up in a first half in U-M history.

Per the Michigan program: The offensive outburst broke Michigan records for most combined points in a single game (132), most combined total yardage in a single game (1,237), most individual receiving yards in a single game — 246 by junior/sophomore slot receiver Roy Roundtree (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) — and most passing yards in a half — 262 by sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach).

It took just 14 seconds for Michigan to score the game’s first points, and it was a back-and-forth affair all afternoon long at The Big House.

Robinson completed 10 of his 20 pass attempts for 305 yards (then a career high that was later broken) and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 19 times for 62 yards. Robinson was then injured, which gave fellow signal-caller Tate Forcier, the starter the year prior, an opportunity to lead Michigan to victory.

Forcier did so, completing 12 of 19 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

Coincidentally, it was the Michigan defense that made the final play of the game, stopping the Illini on a third-overtime two-point conversion try to hold on, 67-65. That came after running back Michael Shaw scored a one-yard touchdown and wideout Junior Hemingway caught a two-point conversion pass from Forcier.
