Michigan Wolverines football has added its second transfer ahead of the 2022 campaign, with Central Florida defensive tackle graduate Cam Goode joining the fold. Goode announced his commitment Friday evening via his Twitter account, after visiting Ann Arbor in early April.

Goode chose Michigan over Vanderbilt and Syracuse, where he also visited. He also received interest from Notre Dame and others.

The former three-star out of Washington (D.C.) St. John’s started his career at Virginia Tech, redshirting in 2018 before playing the past three seasons at UCF. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Goode notched 23 tackles, three sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception in 13 games during the 2021 campaign. His four forced fumbles ranked 12th in the nation.

The solidly-built tackle’s number have gone up in each of his three years with the Knights. He recorded three solo tackles and six assists in 2019 and 12 solos with seven assists in 2020. Goode also added three sacks two seasons ago.

Goode graded out as the 10th-best defender on UCF’s team last season (70.4), according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). He played in all 13 games with three starts, and saw action on a career-high 431 defensive snaps. He generated 11 pressures as a pass-rusher last season.

Goode had a prior relationship with Michigan third-year sophomore running back Blake Corum, who’s also from the Washington D.C. area. He was also a high school teammate of Michigan redshirt sophomore defensive back Quinten Johnson.

Both were key in the process of landing Goode.

“I feel like we need some interior guys on the D-line. We need a little bit more speed,” Corum said on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast. “The game is kind of changing, so speed in space would be good. But I definitely help recruit.”

Cam Goode Helps Bolster Michigan Defensive Line Room

It all starts with redshirt sophomore nose tackle Mazi Smith in the middle, and Michigan’s coaches have said he might just be the team’s top defensive player. But Smith is the lone returning starter on the defensive line, so position coach Mike Elston is happy to add another to the fold even though he likes the pieces he has.

“I’m excited about the personnel,” Elston said this spring. “We’ve got some really good edge players, we’ve got some guys inside that are developing. Obviously some upperclassmen inside with Mazi and [third-year sophomore] Kris Jenkins. Adding depth and developing depth with [redshirt freshmen] George Rooks and Dominick Guidice. [Freshman early enrollee] Mason Graham’s been a great addition coming in mid-year and Ike. We’ve got some good, young guys that are developing and showing they can play some football.”

Jenkins had a big spring and is expected to start alongside Smith on the interior, but Goode could be a good rotational piece — and he has more experience than any defensive tackle on the Michigan roster. Elston has another solid option to work with.
