Michigan football 42, Ohio State 27: Full game recap, box score

Michigan football beat the Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 42-27 on Saturday, earning the first rivalry win of the Jim Harbaugh era. The Wolverines will play in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship next weekend.

Here’s a recap and box score from the Saturday showdown in Ann Arbor.

First quarter

Ohio State won the coin toss and elected to defer, giving Michigan’s offense the ball to start the game. The Wolverines took the ball right down the field with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a 14-yard reverse to freshman wide receiver A.J. Henning. Senior kicker Jake Moody’s extra point was good as Michigan took a 7-0 lead over the Buckeyes with 10:12 left in the first quarter.

The Michigan defense forced an Ohio State three-and-out on the next drive and took over on the OSU 39 after a return from Henning. Third-year freshman Cade McNamara gave the ball right back to the Buckeyes with an interception return to the OSU 22 yard-line.

The Buckeyes went 64 yards in 12 plays, but a sack from senior pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson forced an OSU field goal. A 31-yard kick from Noah Ruggles narrowed the deficit to 7-3 Michigan with 3:36 left in the quarter.

Second quarter

The Buckeyes took a 10-7 lead at 9:12 of the second quarter on a 25-yard touchdown pass from CJ Stroud to wideout Garrett Wilson. Michigan struck back on a 13-play, 82-yard drive set up by a McNamara 37-yard strike to redshirt freshman wide receiver Cornelius Johnson.

Redshirt sophomore running back Hassan Haskins closed out the drive with a one-yard score, resulting in Michigan re-taking the lead at 14-10 with 3:51 to go in the first half. OSU tacked on a field goal by Ruggles after a big Michigan stop to narrow things at 14-13 with nine seconds left in the half.

Third quarter

Michigan football sent a message right out of the locker room that it would not be going away. The Wolverines struck quickly on a three-play, 82-yard drive capped off by a 13-yard touchdown from Haskins, his second of the day. This game Michigan a 21-13 lead with 13:05 to play in the quarter.

The Wolverine defense came up big on the following drive, forcing an OSU punt. Michigan’s offense went another 78 yards in five plays and Haskins’ third touchdown of the day to go up 28-13 with 5:49 to go in the quarter.

Fourth quarter

The Buckeyes struck back early in the fourth quarter. They converted a 3rd-and-19 and went 78 yards in 17 plays and scored a touchdown on a one-yard touchdown run from Treyveon Henderson. They elected to kick the extra point, which made the score 28-20 in favor of Michigan.

Michigan’s offense was not to be denied on Saturday on the ground, though. The Wolverines put together a 66-yard, seven-play drive together in response resulting in Haskins’ fourth touchdown of the day. Moody’s extra point put Michigan up 35-20 with 9:14 to play.

The Buckeyes had to have a drive to get things closer and got one. OSU went 75 yards in 13 plays capped off by a 13-yard pass from Stroud to Henderson. OSU elected for the extra point again, tightening things up to 35-27 in favor of Michigan.
