Michigan Wolverines football is 70 days from kickoff, and the Maize and Blue are working hard to ensure 2022 is even more successful than 2021, when they won the Big Ten and advanced to the College Football Playoff.

The Michigan team has been going through summer workouts for weeks now, and still has over a month until fall camp begins (due to historical precedent, that will begin in early August). The Wolverines have said they’re focusing on the finer details this offseason in hopes those will make the difference in the biggest of games this fall.

Former Michigan Wolverines basketball guard Eli Brooks has signed with the Indiana Pacers and will have a chance to impress during the Summer League. Despite not being drafted, Brooks has been a proven commodity in college and hopes to bring that to the next level.

Brooks was a starter during his final three seasons at Michigan, and had his best campaign this past year. He scored over 1,000 career points and started more than 100 games while with the Maize and Blue. In his four NCAA Tournaments, Brooks and Michigan were never eliminated before the Sweet 16. He made a run to the national title game as a freshman, Sweet 16 as a sophomore and fifth-year senior and Elite Eight as a true senior (the event was canceled in 2020, his junior campaign).

Brooks shouldered more of a load than he ever had to in his Michigan career in 2022. Not only was he the Wolverines’ captain and top leader, Brooks also served as the Wolverines’ second-leading scorer (12.8 points per game) after slotting fourth on the team in points per game in 2021 and fifth in 2020.

Brooks did a little bit of everything all year, generating 0.933 PPP as a pick-and-roll ball handler (73rd percentile in the country) and shooting an adjusted 60.4 percent on catch-and-shoot jump shots (21st in the Big Ten, which made up over 35 percent of his looks.

The Summer League will take place July 7-17 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of UNLV. All 75 games of the 11-day competition will air live on television on ESPN networks or NBA TV.

Michigan will host Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Michigan and Virginia have met one time in the challenge, Nov. 29, 2011. Despite 12 points from Zack Novak and 11 from Trey Burke, the Wolverines fell 70-58 in Charlottesville. Virginia was led by four double figure Cavaliers led by Mike Scott’s double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds).

Overall, U-M is 2-2 against Virginia. The three other games started in 1951 in a neutral-site game in Pittsburgh as the Wolverines claimed a 66-52 victory (Dec. 28). The next game was 29 years later in a NIT quarterfinal matchup at University Hall, a 79-68 Cavaliers win. During U-M’s 1989 national title run, the Maize and Blue defeated Virginia, 102-65, in Lexington, Ky. (March 25) to advance to the Final Four in Seattle.
